Ronald L. Harter, M.D., FASA

Ronald L. Harter, M.D., FASA, is President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He was elected for a one-year term in October 2023.
Dr. Harter is the Jay J. Jacoby professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, and a practicing physician anesthesiologist at the University’s Wexner Medical Center.
Dr. Harter is a member of ASA’s Executive Committee and Administrative Council. Over the past three decades, he has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as speaker of the House of Delegates. He has also served as ASA’s representative to the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience. He has chaired ASA’s Ad Hoc Committee on Physician Well-Being, Young Physicians’ Committee, Committee on Medical Students and Residents, and Committee on Bylaws. He has been a member of several ASA committees, including the Perioperative Surgical Home Steering Committee and Ad Hoc Committee on Perioperative Medicine.
Dr. Harter has been an active member of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists since 1994 and served as its president.
Dr. Harter received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Capital University in Ohio and completed his Doctor of Medicine at The Ohio State University. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
He lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife Katharine; they have five children.

Daniela Filipescu, MD, PhD, DESA, FESAIC, is a cardiac anaesthesiologist, Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy and chief of the Cardiac Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Department II at the Emergency Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Bucharest, Romania.
Professor Filipescu is currently the President of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) for the term 2024-2026. She served as President of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) (2014-2015) and Vice-chair of the Steering Committee of the European Sepsis Alliance (2019-2022). She is a member of the Senate of the Romanian Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (SRATI) and Chair of the Scientific Committee of the SRATI National Congress.
Professor Filipescu’s research main interests include haemostasis and transfusion, perioperative care of the cardiac patient, sepsis, workforce diversity and patient safety. She published more than 300 papers and book chapters, lectured in more than 300 national and international meetings, contributed to various international research groups and co-authored the ESA guidelines on the “Management of severe perioperative bleeding” and the ESA endorsed guidelines on the “Management of bleeding and coagulopathy following major trauma“.
Professor Filipescu is currently co-chairing a national multidisciplinary group for the implementation of Patient Blood Management (PBM) in Romania and the WFSA PBM working group.
Alexis F. Turgeon MD MSc FRCPC
Dr Turgeon is Professor and Director of Research in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Université Laval, Québec City, Québec, Canada. He is a scientist at the CHU de Québec-Université Laval Research Center and practices critical care medicine at l’Hôpital de l’Enfant-Jésus of the CHU de Québec-Université Laval. He leads extensive collaborative research programs in neurocritical care medicine including BRAINapt, a newly funded international platform trial in critically ill patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). In the last years, he led the HEMOTION trial, a multicenter international trial on red blood cell transfusion thresholds in TBI. His research is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Dr Turgeon is the chairholder of the Canada Research Chair in Critical Care Neurology and Trauma.
Carolina Haylock Loor
Graduated as a medical doctor in Honduras before completing postgraduate training in Spain and working as an anaesthesiologist, intensivist, and interventional pain physician at San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Past President of Honduran Anesthesia Society. In 2012 in liaison with the University of Florida, she achieved the oximetry gap zeroing in Honduras as part of the WHO checklist project.
Carolina has represented the Latin American region as a council member for the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists WFSA since 2012 and immediate past Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee. In 2020, elected as the Director of Programs of the WFSA and in 2024 elected as President-Elect of the WFSA. She’s chairing the Volume metrics group for the Utstein2 Global Surgical Health Indicators project.
She is particularly passionate about education and has taught trainees on the Honduran Anesthesiology Residency Program in Pain Management as well as promoted WFSA courses in the Latin American region, including EPM (Essential Pain Management), SAFE (Safer Anaesthesia from Education) Obstetric, SAFE Paediatric, SAFE OR (operating room), PTC (Primary Trauma Care), VAST (Vital Anesthesia Simulation Training) and VAST wellbeing module. Invited speaker for international meetings in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Dr. Alexopoulos, a Cardiovascular and Transplant Anesthesiologist and Intensivist. Dr. Alexopoulos serves as the Co-Director of Cardiac Anesthesia and the Educational Lead in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). He completed his residency and fellowship training at McGill University and Toronto General Hospital. With a focus on cardiovascular anesthesia and critical care, he’s contributed internationally in ECMO and circulatory support education. Lawrence C. Tsen, MD
Lawrence C. Tsen, MD is an Associate Professor in Anaesthesia, Harvard Medical School and Director of Anesthesia for the Center for Reproductive Medicine, in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine, Brigham & Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Tsen’s research focuses on the assessment of novel agents and techniques for labor analgesia, the optimization of maternal and fetal physiology during the peripartum period, and professionalism and wellness for healthcare providers. He has authored over 180 peer reviewed articles and textbook chapters and is the recipient of several research and teaching awards. He serves as Chair for the MassGeneralBrigham Human Research Office/Institutional Review Board and as a member of several global Research Grant Review Boards.
Dr. Tsen has served as President for the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology and Editor in Chief for the International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia. He currently serves as Editor for Chestnut’s Obstetric Anesthesia: Principles and Practices and is on the editorial boards of a number of anesthesia journals. Dr. Tsen’s favorite activity is being “dad” to his three children and playing jazz piano.
Short Bio – G. Burkhard Mackensen, MD, PhD, FASE, FSCAI
Dr. G. Burkhard Mackensen is the Allan J. Treuer Endowed Professor of Anesthesiology and Chair of the University of Washington Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine in Seattle, WA. He also serves as the Director of Interventional Echocardiography at the UW Medicine Heart Institute.
Dr. Mackensen is a practicing cardiothoracic anesthesiologist and a key member of the UW structural heart valve team. As an internationally recognized expert in perioperative and interventional echocardiography, Dr. Mackensen is intimately involved in multidisciplinary efforts that aim to advance minimally invasive transcatheter cardiovascular care. He has given numerous national and international lectures on the role of 2D and 3D TEE in interventional/structural heart disease and surgical decision making, and has published over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles and is the author of more than 20 book chapters.
As a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE), Dr. Mackensen is the Chair of the ASE’s Industry Relations Committee (IRT) and the immediate past Chair of the Council on Perioperative Echocardiography (COPE). Dr. Mackensen also represents the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) at the echocardiography board of the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) and as part of that board created the opportunity for perioperative echocardiography services to be accredited by the IAC.

JM Constantin is Head of the Intensive Care Unit at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris and Professor of Medicine at the Sorbonne University. His main research themes are mechanical ventilation, ARDS and sedation-rehabilitation in intensive care. He has published over 300 articles in these fields. Vincent Bonhomme is Head and Professor of Anesthesiology at the University Hospital of Liege and the University of Liege, Belgium, as well as the Principal Investigator of the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Laboratory, GIGA-Consciousness Thematic Unit, GIGA Research, Liege University, Belgium. He is deeply involved in the Belgian Society of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, Perioperative medicine, and Pain management (BeSARPP), a titulary Member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Acta Anaesthesiologica Belgica, and the co-Chair of the Forum 3 – Organs of the Scientific Committee of the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC).
